Boswellia carterii / Boswellia serrata
The frankincense tree, botanically known as Boswellia serrata, originates from India and belongs to the Burseraceae family. It grows in hot, arid desert regions. To harvest the resin, the bark is scored to allow it to seep out. The frankincense oil is then extracted by steam distillation of the resin.
