Peppermint – Natural relief for headaches and more
August 8, 2025
A stressful day, not drinking enough water, perhaps even a change in the weather, the days before your period – and already a pressing headache is on its way.
Before you reach for a pill, you can try a tried-and-tested essential oil from aromatherapy: Peppermint (Mentha piperita) essential oil has an impressive effect that is not only known from naturopathy but has also been proven by scientific studies. However, be sure to follow the important usage instructions for this powerful oil!
How does peppermint oil work against headaches?
Peppermint oil contains a high proportion of menthol , which stimulates the skin's cold receptors and produces a cooling, pain-relieving effect. It also influences certain pain mediators and can thus effectively relieve tension headaches. A controlled clinical study conducted at the University of Kiel showed that diluted peppermint oil is comparable in effectiveness to 1 g of paracetamol – the pain-relieving effect begins within just a few minutes.
Peppermint oil: A must-have for the home medicine cabinet
- Headaches: When diluted and applied to the temples and neck, the oil provides quick relief.
- Travel sickness and digestive problems: Peppermint oil can be gently used in an inhaler or diluted as an abdominal massage.
- Colds and clear airways: The refreshing properties help to clear the nose – e.g. in the smelling stick.
- Hot flashes and a refreshing boost: The cooling effect makes peppermint oil popular for hot flashes – pure as organic plant water or compress.
- Concentration and clarity: Promotes alertness and mental freshness when used in a scent stick, aroma lamp or diffuser.
